Before & After: Backyard Turf Putting Green Makeover

Home Efficiency
April 07, 2017

“Our oldest son is into golfing, so we wanted to provide him with a putting green so he could practice,” explains Christine D. of Riverside, CA. “He’s been golfing since he was two years old, and he’s very natural and good at it.”

So when she and her husband Kirk purchased a new home, they saw its unsightly backyard as a blank canvas. They decided to have the dirt, weeds, and a chain-link fence removed and replaced with a beautiful putting green, complete with a sand trap for chipping.

Now the whole family, including their youngest son, appreciates having a new space where they can spend time together outdoors. “I love it!” exclaims her husband Kirk. “It opened up the back yard so much from what we had before.” He adds that he loves being outside golfing with the kids. They also take time just relaxing and enjoying the space and each other’s company on evenings and weekends.

Before & After - Backyard turf makeover

What was once an eyesore has been transformed into a beautiful and usable space.

Minimal upkeep is another reason this family is excited about their new turf. Kirk happily demonstrates how easy it is to maintain:. “We just rake up the leaves every once in a while or blow it off with a leaf blower.”

Since artificial turf is an eligible water conservation project, they opted for Renovate America’s HERO Program to finance the upgrade. They found that the Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) structure fit their needs. Says Christine, “I would recommend the HERO Program to friends and family because it is a convenience.” Kirk adds that being able to make the payments through an assessment on their property taxes has been a great benefit.

As a wonderful bonus, the contractor they went with, Turf-N America, is even sponsoring their son’s golfing ambitions after having seen him in action!

Between encouraging their son’s passion, gaining a usable outdoor space, and saving money on water bills, it’s hard for this family to pick their favorite thing about their home’s turf makeover. But as Christine watches her son sink another putt, she points out yet another great reason:, “It’s really important to preserve our water to help our next generation of kids to be able to enjoy what we enjoy.”
