Renewable Energy
WHAT'S ALL THE FUSS ABOUT RENEWABLE ENERGY?
Conventional energy is derived from fossil fuels such as oil, coal and natural gas. “Renewable Energy” refers to non-fossil fuel based clean energy sources, including solar energy. Renewable energy is generated from natural resources—such as sunlight, wind, tides, wood and geothermal heat—which are renewable (naturally replenished). In 2006, about 18% of global energy consumption came from renewable sources.
As the table below illustrates, the technical potential of renewable energy sources is 18 times more than current global primary energy use. Renewable energy is clean, domestic and naturally replenished.
